Chiang Mai International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Chiang Mai airport is only 3-4 km from the old city moat, so close that for many travellers the choice isn't between the airport and the centre but between two neighbourhoods of the centre itself. There is no train or skytrain: taxis and Grab remain the fastest way to any area, with low fares given the distance. Sleeping literally next to the terminal only makes sense for a layover of a few hours; in every other case, the old city or Nimman offer much more for just a few extra minutes on the road.

Airport area

About 3 km, 6 minutes by car or Grab; metered taxis wait outside arrivals with a fixed 50 THB surcharge.

Best for: Short layovers or very early morning flights, when you want the shortest possible transfer time.

Pros
  • The shortest possible transfer to and from the terminal, handy for a morning flight
  • Lower rates than the hotels in the old city or Nimman
Cons
  • An area of through roads and residential blocks, nothing to do on foot in the evening
  • For any temple, market or restaurant you still need a taxi or Grab

Recommended hotels in this area

  • HOP INN Chiang Mai Airport: About 3 km and 6 minutes by car from the terminal, designed for those arriving late or leaving at dawn; simple rooms, but with air conditioning and hot water guaranteed.

Best for: Those who want to visit the temples around the moat and the Night Bazaar on foot, with a transfer from the airport that is still short.

Pros
  • Temples, markets and the old city moat reachable on foot from the hotels in the area
  • Metered taxis queuing at arrivals, with no need to book a transfer
Cons
  • The one-way streets around the moat make pick-ups slower than the actual distance suggests
  • During peak hours the journey can more than double compared with the theoretical 10 minutes

Pros
