Cologne Bonn Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Cologne-Bonn Airport is connected to central Cologne by the S-Bahn (lines S13 and S19) in 15-20 minutes, with departures every 20 minutes from about 4:30 until midnight. For a dawn flight or a late-night return, when the trains aren't running yet, staying in the airport area avoids the problem; those arriving at normal hours can instead easily reach both the area around the Central Station and the Cathedral, and the historic center proper. Cologne-Bonn also serves Bonn, but the most convenient rail connections remain those toward Cologne.

Airport area

The Leonardo Hotel has a free shuttle of about 5 minutes; the other two are reached by taxi (about 10 minutes) or with the S19 to Frankfurter Straße (about 13 minutes, departures every 20-30 minutes).

Best for: overnight stopovers or dawn flights, when the S-Bahn to the center isn't running yet

Pros
  • The Leonardo Hotel is 300 meters from the terminal with a free shuttle
  • More choice of price ranges than the other areas on this list
Cons
  • An area of only hotels and offices, nothing within walking distance for the evening
  • Without its own shuttle, a taxi or S-Bahn is still needed, there's no reaching it on foot
