How to always have your travel documents on your phone
Keeping passport, visas and travel insurance on your phone, in a password-protected app rather than the photo gallery, provides real security if your original documents are lost.
Scanning and saving securely
Taking photos or scanning your passport, visas and travel insurance is the first step, but they need to be saved in an app protected by password or biometry, not in your standard photo gallery. 1Password, for instance, lets you attach documents to your accounts and makes them available across all connected devices, with document storage included in paid plans.
Offline access isn't automatic
An often-overlooked detail: with 1Password a document stays visible offline only if it's been opened at least once on that device while the network was active, because the app saves it locally in cache. Checking your documents before you leave, not during the trip, makes sure you don't find yourself unable to access them if there's no network.
Travel Mode for sensitive data
For those crossing borders where they'd prefer not to show all their accounts, 1Password offers a Travel Mode that temporarily removes from devices any vaults not marked as "safe for travel", leaving visible only the essential documents; it needs to be set up before you leave, it's not designed as a backup but as a privacy filter.
Backup and sharing with a trusted person
Sharing vault access with a trusted person who stayed home remains valid security if you lose your phone; turning on two-factor authentication on the app you choose prevents the same loss from also compromising your saved documents.
Open and verify all your saved documents at least a day before you leave, with an active connection: it's the only way to be sure they stay accessible offline during your trip.
