Ireland West Knock Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Despite the name, the airport is closer to Charlestown than to the village of Knock: Charlestown is about 6 km away and a few minutes by car, while Knock Shrine, one of Ireland's most visited pilgrimage sites, is about 20 km away and 20-25 minutes down the road. Those arriving for the pilgrimage almost always accept the longer transfer, because it's in Knock that the basilica and most of the accommodation built for pilgrims are found; those only passing through or looking for a cheap bed can stop earlier, in Charlestown.

Charlestown

Nearby town · About 6 km and a few minutes by car from the terminal; no frequent direct bus, so a rental car or a booked taxi is advisable.

Best for: For those who want to stay a few minutes from the terminal, for an early flight or a short layover.

Pros
  • The town closest to the airport, useful for those who don't want to travel far the evening before a flight
  • Family-run guesthouse with breakfast often mentioned as the highlight
Cons
  • Few evening venues outside the guesthouses themselves
  • Knock Shrine still requires a 20-25 minute transfer

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Riverside Guesthouse: Family-run guesthouse in the centre of Charlestown, with an in-house restaurant serving seasonal local cuisine every day; breakfast, with salmon and home-made cakes, is the most mentioned highlight among guests.

Knock and the shrine

Neighbourhood · About 20 km and 20-25 minutes by car from the terminal; there's no direct public transport link to the airport, only taxi or your own car.

Best for: Pilgrims and visitors to Knock Shrine, who accept a 20-25 minute transfer from the airport to sleep right next to the basilica.

Pros
  • Knock House Hotel is a 5-minute walk from the shrine and the basilica
  • An area designed for pilgrims, with guesthouses throughout and a more intimate atmosphere than a city
Cons
  • 20-25 minutes from the airport, worth weighing if the goal is just sleeping close to check-in
  • Evening life is almost nonexistent outside the hotels' own restaurants

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Knock House Hotel: A 5-minute walk from the Knock shrine and basilica, on 100 acres of green grounds; 68 rooms, the Four Seasons restaurant and organisation of retreats and pilgrimages, including the 180 km Ireland West Camino.
