Mexico City lounges: a guide to choosing by terminal

Anyone passing through Mexico City airport with Priority Pass is spoilt for choice, while those flying Aeroméxico have far fewer options. The lounges are split between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and in both it is the cards that make the difference: Priority Pass, Platinum American Express and the cards of Mexican banks open different doors, while the flag carrier's main lounges are closed for works.
The first thing to look at is the terminal: in Mexico City, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have separate offerings, and some lounges say so plainly, such as The Lounge Mexico, reserved for flights departing from Terminal 1. The second is the card, because here credit cards weigh as much as tickets: besides Priority Pass, the American Express Platinum and the premium cards of Banamex and HSBC count.

At Terminal 1 Priority Pass opens quite a few doors, and several lounges stay open all night: The Grand Lounge Elite, Lounge 19, VIPort Lounge and The Lounge Mexico. Lounge 19 and VIPort Lounge also have the advantage of advance booking, while The Lounge Mexico lets one child under twelve in free per cardholder, with a maximum stay of four hours. Two lounges are best skipped in certain situations: the Celeste Lounge opens only in the afternoon, so it is no use to those leaving in the morning, and The Gate Priority Club asks for a surcharge even from cardholders. Those with the American Express Platinum Card must choose according to destination. In the international area of Terminal 1 there is The Centurion Lounge International, whose strong point is the spa and showers; for domestic flights there is The Centurion Lounge Domestic, which focuses on a premium bar and a shoe-shine service. The Salón Beyond Banamex welcomes holders of the Beyond card, but only close to departure: at most two hours before domestic flights and three before international ones. At Terminal 2 the independent offering is more compact. With Priority Pass the lounges open all night are the VIPort Lounge, compact and bookable, and The Harmony Lounge, which has a children's play area and a cold buffet with alcohol included, and lets one child under twelve in free per cardholder: for a family it is the natural choice. The Hidden Gate, on the other hand, requires a mandatory surcharge, guests included, which in exchange covers standard alcoholic drinks. Here too the cards have lounges of their own. The Centurion Lounge in Terminal 2 spreads over two levels, with a spa, showers and work stations; the Salón Beyond Banamex repeats the rules of its Terminal 1 twin; the HSBC Premier Lounge, in the restaurant area of international departures, is reserved for Premier customers with an active card and offers a bar and a networking room. The weak point is the home airline. Aeroméxico's two Salón Premier lounges in Terminal 2 are closed for renovation: check the status in the table above before counting on them. In the meantime Aeroméxico premium passengers and SkyTeam Elite Plus members use the Terraza Premier Aeroméxico by Heineken, carved out of an existing, small lounge: those who also hold an American Express Platinum can fall back on the Centurion in the same terminal.
In Mexico City it pays to think in this order: terminal, card, time of departure. At Terminal 1 Priority Pass offers the widest choice, with several lounges open all night and some bookable, but the Celeste Lounge does not help in the morning and The Gate Priority Club costs a surcharge. At Terminal 2 The Harmony Lounge is the answer for those travelling with children, The Centurion Lounge for those with the Platinum who want a spa and showers. Those flying Aeroméxico, as long as the Salón Premier lounges stay closed, must make do with the small Terraza.
