Kalmar Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Kalmar Airport is just 5 km from the centre, with the Flygbuss taking about 10 minutes and timed to flight arrivals; a taxi costs 130-160 SEK and is just as quick. For a city this small and compact, the historic centre remains almost always the most convenient choice, not least because it gathers most of the restaurants and shops; those travelling by car, or departing at dawn when the Flygbuss isn't running yet, can instead consider a hotel on the E22, a few minutes from both the airport and the city.
Historic centre of Kalmar
City centre · Flygbuss from the airport in about 10 minutes (50 SEK), with departures coordinated with flight arrivals; by taxi 10-15 minutes.
Best for: Those who want the castle, the seventeenth-century citadel and restaurants a few steps from the hotel, with the Flygbuss arriving right in the centre.
Pros
- Stortorget, the citadel and the harbour are within walking distance of almost all the hotels in the centre
- Kalmar central station, a few minutes' walk from the Stortorget hotels, also serves trains to Växjö and Stockholm
Cons
- The Flygbuss doesn't always run for the very first morning flights: in that case a taxi booked in advance is needed
- Scarce parking, often paid, on the historic centre's streets
Recommended hotels in this area
- ProfilHotels Calmar Stadshotell: An Art Nouveau building right on Stortorget, the main square, three minutes on foot from the central station; spa area with sauna and whirlpool, breakfast served in the first-floor winter garden.
- Slottshotellet: An 1864 country hotel amid eighteenth- and nineteenth-century villas, three minutes on foot from Kalmar Castle and opposite the art museum; rooms furnished with antique furniture and wooden floors.

On the E22, between airport and city
Airport area · Dragonvägen is on the E22: 5 minutes by car from both the airport and Kalmar's central station.
Best for: Those travelling by car, with a dawn flight or arriving late at night, who prefer not to depend on the Flygbuss.
Pros
- The same transfer time to both the airport and the city centre, handy for those who need to move both ways
- Free parking and an indoor pool with sauna, handy for those arriving late in the evening
Cons
- An area of warehouses and arterial roads: for dinner or a walk you need a car or a taxi into the centre
- No shop or restaurant within walking distance beyond those of the hotel
Recommended hotels in this area
- Scandic Kalmar: On Dragonvägen, along the E22: 5 minutes by car from both the airport and the central station, with pool, sauna and free parking for those arriving or leaving by car.
