La Tontouta International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

La Tontouta airport is about 50 km from Nouméa, a good hour's drive with no rail alternative at all: the airport shuttle takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half for 1,800 XPF, while the taxi is faster but costs around 7,500 XPF per ride. With this fixed distance for anyone arriving, the real choice isn't between airport and city but between Nouméa's own neighbourhoods: those who want a pool, beach and restaurants a few steps away should head for Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons, where most of the chain hotels are concentrated; those who prefer the commercial heart around Place des Cocotiers find fewer properties but more authentic city life. For anyone arriving in the middle of the night or leaving at dawn there is also a motel right next to the La Tontouta terminal, handy for skipping the long drive but surrounded only by runway and countryside.

Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons

Neighbourhood · The same 45-90 minutes by shuttle (1,800 XPF) or about 50 minutes by taxi (7,500 XPF) as any transfer from La Tontouta: there's no train, and the journey doesn't change by choosing this area over downtown.

Best for: Those looking for beach, pool and restaurants within walking distance, in the area with the highest concentration of hotels in Nouméa.

Pros
  • The beaches of Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons are within walking distance of the hotels on the promenade
  • Restaurants, bars and kayak or paddleboard rental concentrated along the same seafront promenade
Cons
  • Place des Cocotiers and the old town are several kilometres away, so you need a taxi or a city bus
  • A tourist area, with higher prices than the rest of the city

Place des Cocotiers and the centre

City centre · The same 45-90 minutes by shuttle or about 50 minutes by taxi from La Tontouta that apply to the whole of Nouméa: the distance from the airport doesn't change compared with the Anse Vata area.

Best for: Those who want the commercial and administrative heart of the city, within walking distance of the cathedral and the port, accepting less choice of hotels than the seafront area.

Pros
  • Nouméa Cathedral, Place des Cocotiers and the port reachable in a few minutes on foot
  • Airline offices (Aircalin, Air Calédonie, Air France) right below the hotel
Cons
  • No beach within walking distance: for the sea you still need a transfer to Anse Vata
  • Little choice of tourist properties compared with the coastal area

Recommended hotels in this area

  • Hotel Le Paris: 48 rooms two blocks from Place des Cocotiers, right in front of Nouméa Cathedral; designed for business trips, with a meeting room and an in-house restaurant.
