Unconventional pets on flights: what to know
For birds, reptiles and small rodents, many airlines do not provide transport in the cabin or in the passenger cargo hold at all: the most common route is specialized cargo, and protected species also require a valid CITES certificate.
Cabin, cargo hold or cargo: it depends on the species
Many airlines allow only dogs and cats in the cabin, leaving other species to the pressurized cargo hold or, more often for large animals or delicate species, a specialized cargo carrier for live animals. It is advisable to contact the "Special Cargo" office or animal department of the airline directly before booking, to get written confirmation that that species is accepted on that route: many airlines exclude it entirely.
CITES certificate for protected species
If the animal belongs to a species listed in the CITES Convention...; the veterinary authority (many parrots and reptiles do), an export permit issued by the CITES authority of the country of departure is required, to be requested well in advance: without that document the animal risks seizure at the border, with serious legal consequences for the owner. Even species not listed in CITES may be subject to specific import health regulations, which in some cases include quarantine periods or vaccination certificates: it is essential to verify them with the veterinary authority or embassy of the destination country on a case-by-case basis, because there is no rule valid for all species.
The carrier for non-conventional species
The container must be escape-proof, sturdy, and equipped with watering systems that do not spill with the movements of the aircraft; insulating materials inside help maintain a stable temperature during ground movements, the time when these animals are most exposed to temperature fluctuations.
Before buying the ticket, ask the airline in writing if your species is accepted on that route: it is the check that avoids the worst surprise, finding yourself at check-in with an animal that no carrier can take on board.
