Fiumicino lounges: which to choose before departing
Leaving Rome with a little margin before boarding raises a practical question: which lounge to sit in? At Fiumicino the answer depends on the terminal of the flight, which separates Schengen departures from those to the rest of the world, and on the way you intend to get in: with the airline, with a lounge card or by paying at the door.
The ticket already says a lot. If the destination is in the Schengen area, domestic flights included, you start from Terminal 1; for non-Schengen destinations, such as the United Kingdom or the United States, boarding is in area E of Terminal 3. The lounges should therefore be looked for in your own terminal: those of the other one, for those departing from Rome, do not come into the choice.
The first Plaza Premium First opened in Europe: besides the buffet it offers an à la carte menu, signature cocktails and a selection of wines, in more intimate spaces than the standard Plaza Premium.

Those flying ITA Airways in Business or with Volare Executive, Premium or SkyTeam Elite Plus status have an airline lounge in both terminals: the ITA Airways Hangar Lounge on the upper floor of Terminal 1 and the ITA Airways Lounge Piazza di Spagna for non-Schengen flights, with a separate VIP room. Both have showers. Those flying ITA without entitlement can buy entry: for Piazza di Spagna it is worth doing so online, where it costs less than at the airport, while at the Hangar the price does not change.
Before paying, it is worth checking the partner airlines. The Prima Vista Domus in Terminal 1 welcomes premium passengers and status holders of carriers such as Iberia, Finnair, TAP, LOT and Aegean; the Prima Vista Portus in Terminal 3 opens to passengers of Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, United, American Airlines, Air Canada and others. In First or Business with British Airways or Cathay Pacific, or with oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status, you go to the British Airways Lounge, which recent reviews describe as having worn furnishings and no shower. At the Emirates Lounge Skywards Platinum and Gold members get in only if they fly Emirates.
Without a premium ticket or status, there remain lounge cards and paid entry. In Terminal 1 the Primeclass Lounge, run by the Turkish group TAV, has phone booths, useful for those travelling on business, while the shower is paid separately. For something more than the buffet there is Plaza Premium First, the first Plaza Premium First opened in Europe, with a selection of wines; together with the Plaza Premium Lounge it is also the Schengen lounge that welcomes first those flying early in the morning. In Terminal 3 the Plaza Premium Lounge in the Tax Free Mall gallery costs half as much as its namesake in Terminal 1.
Those departing with children find a reduced rate for them in the Prima Vista lounges, and the youngest do not pay. The Domus also has an outdoor terrace; the Portus instead imposes a time limit on stays, to be considered if you arrive at the airport well in advance.
Before leaving home, at Fiumicino it is best to reason in this order. The departure terminal determines which lounges are reachable. Then check whether your airline or status already opens a door, in the ITA lounges, in the partner Prima Vista lounges or in the British Airways or Emirates lounges. Only at the end do the lounge card or paid entry come into play, choosing between the modest price of the Primeclass and of the Plaza Premium in Terminal 3 and the extra services of Plaza Premium First or the Domus.
