Which lounge to choose at Heathrow, terminal by terminal

At Heathrow the right question is not which lounge is the best, but which terminal you leave from. Each terminal has its own offering, with the lounges of the airlines that operate there and at least one independent lounge you enter with Priority Pass or by paying. Starting from the terminal, and then from the card or ticket in your pocket, almost always settles the choice.
Terminal 5 is the home of British Airways and its lounges almost all belong to the airline: the Galleries Club North and South in the main building and a third in the T5B satellite, the Galleries First with its open-air terrace and the Concorde Room for first class. If you do not fly Club or First and have no oneworld status you have two independent alternatives: the Plaza Premium Lounge, the first in the terminal to open in the morning, and the Club Aspire Lounge, which also accepts LoungeKey and where it is worth booking. At Terminal 3 oneworld, Virgin Atlantic and Emirates live side by side. With a premium ticket you go to your own airline's lounge: British Airways' Galleries Club / Galleries First, Cathay Pacific's two adjoining lounges, with the Noodle Bar in the Business one, the Qantas London Lounge with its menu by Rockpool, the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse for those flying Upper Class or Delta One. Beware of American Airlines' Admirals Club: it closes in the early afternoon and is no use for evening departures.

If you enter with an access card or by paying, Terminal 3 offers the widest choice. The No1 Lounge and the My Lounge, born from the renovation of the former Club Aspire, both overlook the runways; the Clubrooms by No1 raise the level with table service and cocktails, but charge a supplement even to Priority Pass or DragonPass holders and do not admit the youngest children. American Express Platinum and Centurion holders have instead the Centurion Lounge, with showers, reserved for those leaving from this terminal. Terminal 2 gathers the lounges of the Star Alliance airlines, plus Aer Lingus's. In area A there are the Lufthansa Business and Senator Lounge, which also admits paid entries, and the Aer Lingus Gold Circle Lounge; in the T2B satellite the SilverKris Lounge of Singapore Airlines, the United Club and the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge, which closes much earlier than the others. Among the independents you choose between the Plaza Premium Lounge and the No1 Lounge, with a British-inspired menu and a library corner. At Terminal 4 the airline lounges are those of Etihad, Qatar Airways, Gulf Air and Saudia. The Qatar Airways Premium Lounge can be entered only with a paid premium ticket: if you have a reward ticket or only oneworld status you should use the Frequent Flyer Lounge, which is temporarily closed. For everyone else there is the Plaza Premium Lounge, open all day, while Blush by Plaza Premium, with a kosher buffet and access also for EL AL premium passengers, on many days opens only in the morning. If you land in the morning you can freshen up before heading into the city: at Terminal 3 the Plaza Premium Lounge (Arrivals) offers showers and breakfast, at Terminal 5 the British Airways Arrivals Lounge is designed for the airline's passengers. Both close in the middle of the day.
At Heathrow, in short, you choose in three steps. First the terminal, because each has its own offering. Then the access credential: with a premium ticket or a status your airline's or alliance's lounge is almost always the natural choice, while with Priority Pass, DragonPass or by paying you pick among Plaza Premium, No1, My Lounge and Club Aspire. Finally the hours, which count for more here than elsewhere: the Admirals Club, the Maple Leaf and the Blush close early or open only at certain times, and should be checked in the table before you rely on them.
