Darwin International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Darwin Airport shares its runway and control tower with the Royal Australian Air Force base, a legacy of the Second World War that makes it one of Australia's few joint civil-military airports. It's also one of the closest to the centre among the country's big cities: just 13 km and 15 minutes by taxi separate the terminals from the Esplanade. This is why the centre is almost always the right choice, even with a flight departing mid-morning; staying near the terminals only makes sense for those arriving late at night with a dawn flight, a common situation given the Top End's tropical climate.
Airport area (Marrara)
Airport area · Novotel and Mercure are both a few minutes on foot or with the hotel's free shuttle from the terminal; the Ibis is slightly further and is reached with the same shuttle on request.
Best for: One-night stopovers and departures before 6am, when you'd rather not rely on a night-time taxi to arrive on time.
Pros
- No risk of missing the flight due to traffic or queues on the Stuart Highway
- The hotel shuttles avoid the taxi, which since 2024 has included a fixed airport exit fee of 4 AUD
Cons
- Around it there's only the industrial and commercial area of Marrara: for dinner you stay at the hotel
- For an evening on the Esplanade or at the Mindil Beach Market, you still need 15-20 minutes by taxi
Recommended hotels in this area
- Novotel Darwin Airport: The closest to the terminals, with an outdoor pool and an in-house restaurant; useful for those arriving after a long flight who don't want to move around.
- Mercure Darwin Airport Resort: Cheaper than the neighbouring Novotel, with a pool and tropical gardens; some reviews note rooms in need of renovation relative to the price.
- Ibis Darwin Airport Hotel: The cheapest of the three, designed for those who just want a bed between two flights, with no resort pretensions.

Darwin CBD and the Esplanade
City centre · 13 km from the airport: a taxi costs about 30 AUD (including the fixed 4 AUD exit fee) and takes 15 minutes outside peak hours, up to 25 at the busiest times; the public bus requires a change and about an hour.
Best for: Those who want the Mindil Beach sunset market, the Waterfront promenade and the restaurants of Smith Street Mall within walking distance.
Pros
- The Esplanade, Parliament House and the Waterfront promenade with its swimmable lagoon within walking distance
- The Mindil Beach night market, from April to October, is a few minutes by taxi from the centre
Cons
- No train or tram: every trip to the airport requires a taxi or a rideshare
- In the wet season, from November to March, afternoon storms can slow traffic in the city
Recommended hotels in this area
- DoubleTree by Hilton Esplanade Darwin: On the Esplanade, a few steps from the waterfront and Parliament House; the rooms with bay views are the most requested according to reviews.
- Hilton Darwin: In the heart of the CBD, a few minutes' walk from Smith Street Mall; among the most central chain hotels in the city.
- Adina Apartment Hotel Darwin Waterfront: Apartments with a kitchen in the Waterfront district, convenient for families or longer stays; some reviews mention noise due to the central location.
