Ercan International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Ercan connects northern Cyprus almost exclusively with Turkey, through which all flights pass, and it is about 23 km from Lefkoşa (North Nicosia), with taxis, hotel shuttles, or the KIBHAS scheduled bus service as the main transfer options. The most convenient base remains the walled Old City, on the northern side of the border that divides the city: here you'll find restored Ottoman houses overlooking the alleys of Arabahmet and the streets near Famagusta Gate. Many of Nicosia's large international hotels, by contrast, are on the southern side, in the Republic of Cyprus, beyond the crossing: they aren't a practical base for anyone arriving from Ercan without a specific reason to cross the border.

Walled Old City (North Lefkoşa)

City centre · About 23 km from the airport, 25-30 minutes by car or taxi; KIBHAS shuttles connect the airport to the center with 12 runs a day between 8:10am and 00:30.

Best for: Travelers who want restored Ottoman houses, the alleys of Arabahmet, and the Venetian Walls within walking distance of the room.

Pros
  • Restored stone, Ottoman-style houses, concentrated in the Arabahmet quarter and near Famagusta Gate
  • The Venetian Walls, Ledra Street, and the historic bazaars are all just minutes away on foot
Cons
  • Narrow streets inside the walls, often without direct car access right up to the door
  • No sea nearby: for the coast of Girne (Kyrenia) you need a car or an organized excursion

Recommended hotels in this area

  • 1927 Heritage House: A house from 1927 in the Arabahmet quarter, the city's former Armenian district, 3 minutes' walk from the Venetian Walls and Famagusta Gate; an inner courtyard typical of Ottoman houses.
  • 22 Yedia North Nicosia Turkish Side: An apartment in the northern walled city, a few minutes' walk from the Venetian Column in the main square; a simple option for those who want to stay within the walls without a true historic house.
