Henry E Rohlsen Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels
Henry E. Rohlsen is in the south-central part of the island, equidistant from St Croix's only two towns: Frederiksted, on the west coast, is less than 15 minutes away, while Christiansted, the main port and the centre with the most hotels and restaurants, is 25-30 minutes to the east. The east-coast resorts, such as Divi Carina Bay, are even further, almost 40 minutes away: on an island 50 km long, the choice of area really does change the transfer, it's not a minor detail.
Christiansted
Neighbourhood · About 18-19 km from the terminal, 25-30 minutes by car or taxi; there are no direct shuttles, you need a private transfer or a rental car.
Best for: Those wanting the Danish old town, the harbour and the island's greatest concentration of restaurants and hotels, accepting half an hour's transfer from the airport.
Pros
- An eighteenth-century Danish old town, with the harbour and market within walking distance of the hotels
- The island's greatest concentration of restaurants and bars, open even out of season
Cons
- One of the longest transfers in this guide, worth considering for early-morning flights
- The best beaches are out of town: from the old town you still need a car
Recommended hotels in this area
- Caravelle Hotel St Croix: In the heart of the historic district of Christiansted, just steps from the harbour and the Government House; among the most central hotels on the island, with an in-house pool and restaurant.
- Company House Hotel St Croix: A 3-star boutique hotel in the historic district, just minutes from the beach and the harbour; scores higher on location and cleanliness than on amenities.

East End and Divi Carina Bay
Neighbourhood · About 31 km from the terminal, the longest transfer among the areas in this guide: 35-40 minutes by car, impractical without a vehicle for the whole holiday.
Best for: Those seeking a secluded all-inclusive resort on the island's less-trodden coast and who don't mind renting a car for the rest of the holiday.
Pros
- Quiet, little-visited beaches compared with those near Christiansted
- An all-inclusive resort with a casino, handy for those who don't want to organise meals or evening outings
Cons
- The island's longest transfer, best avoided with early-morning flights or heavy luggage
- Isolated from Christiansted: to leave the resort you still need a car
Recommended hotels in this area
- Carina Bay All-Inclusive Resort & Casino: Couples-only all-inclusive resort on the south-east coast of St Croix, with a casino, two pools and a private beach; the longest transfer among the resorts in this guide.
