Mar de Cortés International Airport: where to stay, areas and recommended hotels

Mar de Cortés airport sits about 28 km east of Puerto Peñasco, isolated in the Sonoran desert: there are no hotels in the immediate vicinity of the terminal, and the most popular place to stay, Sandy Beach, is 45-60 minutes away by car, so it always pays to book a transfer or rent a car before arriving. Unlike many other destinations in this guide, there are no large hotel chains here: accommodation is almost entirely in Sandy Beach's condo-resorts, towers with hundreds of units run like hotels (reception, pools, housekeeping) but sold and rented out as individual apartments.

Sandy Beach

Neighbourhood · About 45-60 minutes by car from the airport along the coastal road; no direct public bus or shuttle, only private transfers or rental cars.

Best for: Those who want Puerto Peñasco's widest and most popular beach, with pools, restaurants and resort life around the condo.

Pros
  • Over 1,700 metres of sandy beach with shallow waters, ideal for families
  • Resorts with multiple pools, in-house restaurants and a private beach: everything within walking distance once you arrive
Cons
  • The transfer from the airport is the longest in this guide: 45-60 minutes, to be booked in advance
  • These are not traditional hotels but condo-resorts: rooms and services vary widely from one unit to another, even within the same building
