Barajas lounges: Schengen, non-Schengen and Iberia

At Madrid-Barajas you choose the lounge in two moves: first the terminal, then the zone. Almost all the lounges, in fact, serve either Schengen or non-Schengen departures, not both. The good news is that almost every area has an Aena Sala VIP, run by the body that manages the airport, with paid entry open to everyone.
The Barajas model is unusual for a major hub: the main lounges belong not to the airlines but to the airport. The Aena Salas VIP have Madrid names, from Cibeles to Gran Vía, are paid for at the entrance and many also accept Priority Pass. The rates for the non-Schengen zones are a little higher than those for domestic and Schengen flights.

In Terminal 1 the lounges serve non-Schengen departures and are very different from one another. The Sala VIP Cibeles stays open day and night, accepts Priority Pass and some American Express cards, and has an outdoor terrace for smokers and a luggage storage. The new Sala VIP Altitude, on the second floor of the boarding area, opens only for a fee, but offers showers, an indoor and outdoor bar and a large terrace over the apron: it is the most expensive of the Salas VIP, and also the one with the most services. In Terminals 2 and 3, for domestic and Schengen flights, you enter respectively the Sala VIP Puerta de Alcalá, open all night, with a relaxation area and luggage storage, and the Sala VIP Puerta del Sol, accessible to people with disabilities. Both accept Priority Pass. Terminal 4 hosts the Iberia lounges. In the main building, for domestic, Schengen and air-bridge flights, there is the Iberia Premium Lounge Dalí; in the T4S satellite, for international flights, including all Iberia long-haul ones, the larger Iberia Premium Lounge Velázquez. Only Business passengers and oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members get into both: entry cannot be bought. Those flying from T4 without these requirements still have a choice. In the main building there are the Sala VIP Plaza Mayor, which accepts Priority Pass and some Amex cards, and the Sala VIP Retiro, paid. In the satellite the Sala VIP Neptuno, on the second floor, is open day and night and accepts Priority Pass and Amex, while the Sala VIP Gran Vía, on the ground floor near gates S127 and S128, opens only for a fee. In several Salas VIP the same rule applies: you do not get in earlier than three hours before departure, so those who arrive very early have to wait outside.
The criterion at Barajas is simple. Those flying Iberia in Business, or with a high oneworld status, use the Dalí for Europe and the Velázquez for the rest of the world. Everyone else chooses the Aena Sala VIP of their own zone: with Priority Pass you get into many of these without paying, while those departing from Terminal 1 for a non-Schengen country who want a shower and a terrace can consider the Altitude, allowing for the higher price.
