Traveling with pets during a short layover
Fiumicino has four dedicated PET areas in operation, two at Terminal 1, one at Terminal 3 arrivals and one near baggage belt 14, designed also for those with only a few minutes between one flight and another.
Transferring the pet carrier during the flight change
With a single ticket that includes both flights, the transfer of the pet carrier in the hold between one aircraft and another normally happens automatically, managed by ground staff without the need to retrieve and re-check baggage. It's still worth confirming it at initial check-in, especially if the layover involves a change of aircraft or airline within the same codeshare agreement.
Pet relief areas at the airport: where they really are
Not all layovers offer dedicated spaces, but some of the major airports are equipped with them: at Fiumicino, for example, the four PET areas allow the animal to stretch even during a short layover, while the Dog Relais in the long-stay parking offers a more structured option for those with more time available. For your specific layover on your itinerary, the services page on the airport website remains the most reliable source to know if a pet relief area exists and where exactly it is located.
The time margin to add to the theoretical minimum
The minimum connection time indicated by the airline is calculated for a passenger without a pet: with a pet carrier, especially if in the hold, it's wise to add a prudent margin, because the transfer operations and a possible stop at the pet relief area require time that the theoretical minimum doesn't account for. Informing ground staff about the presence of a pet during a tight layover can also facilitate priority passage between the two flights.
If the layover takes place at an airport you don't know, check on the airport's own website for the existence of a pet relief area before you leave: discovering it during the layover, with only a few minutes available, is too late.
